One year anniversary

by Rachel Prince

One year ago today we were breaking ground on a dusty, dry lot behind a parking area and garbage dumpster in a public health clinic compound. We had a plan to make food grow in this devastated forgotten space. We had some gardening knowledge, about 5000 Rand (450 US dollars), and a whole lot of hope and enthusiasm.

It's one year later and spring time has returned to Johanessburg. And this time, after a year of work and experimentation, we are ready to meet the South African summer with full confidence, piles of fertile soil, a year of gardening experience, and a truck full of donated organic vegetable seedlings.

A quick scan of the neighborhood surrounding our little project would leave you wondering how a community driven veggie project fits into the whole thing...or it makes your realize exactly WHY a community driven veggie garden fits in so well.

Through our veggie patch and connected soup kitchen we have managed to serve over 7800 meals to public health patients and connect with people of all ages.

From Seed to soup

by Rachel Prince

On Monday October 6th, 2014 we had a breakthrough moment here at Sibahle Community. It was the moment that our first home-grown spinach leaves were harvested and added to the daily meal. From seed to soup right on the grounds of the Tladi health clinic.

Now after more bountiful rains and the full swing of summer our kitchen team "shops" for veggies every day by strolling out to the garden and harvesting fresh leaves of swiss chard, mustard greens, and parsley for the daily soups. Granted, our grocery store is still in short supply of some keys items such as beets, carrots, tomatoes and other crops that are still busy ripening on the vine or underground, but in time those too will be on offer.
